 Embarrassingly (sp?) it's down to me.  I'd copied the BLFS book's
configuration for xulrunner, including the line
mk_add_options MOZ_MAKE_FLAGS=-j$MAKEFLAGS

 Like one ofi the lines in the mozilla config, which I caught, that
dollar needs to be escaped.  If it _is_ escaped, but MAKEFLAGS is not
set, make traps it and errors.

 Currently building with -j2 while I write this.  Will fix the book
somewhen, once I've built firefox.
