It doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I must raise some points: the ultimate GNU distro is like Utopia: we won't be able to get there, although we can get close. I've read previous comments on this topic and what I can say is that you could, for example let the user decide what package to install (that would be the ultimate OS for me, but I'll probably have to do research first). However, it'll be a disaster for a newbie since they will not know what they are doing, number one, and they'll ve deterred from this 'ultimate distro'. I'd suggest that if you are seasoned Linux guru, the ultimate distro is one that you build yourself. 
However, on the other hand, initially, this distro could install default packages and have an option where advanced users can easily customise the OS (though you can do this with any Linux OS. To what extent, you should find out and get this 'ultimate distro' to go beyond that.) If you can make an OS that is initially easy to install, but is extremely customisable and stable, no matter what the user does. Another useful feature would be the ability for the OS to be able to fall back to defaults in case the customisation of the user fails. This will allow them to fix their errors without reinstalling the OS. I hope my opinion helps you with your quest. You can't make everyone happy, but try to make as many people happy as possible.

Hi all! I've read parts of LFS, but I know very little about making distributions overall.
 
Usually, I use Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, and now trying GuixSD. The BIG PROBLEM that I have with distributions, is that I often find myself jumping from one to another because of something that's available on a distro, and not on others (or because I hate some distro decisions, such as Debian for using systemd). I really hate this, because what I like about the GNU operating system is that I can choose what packages I want (at least in theory). But this is not the case with distros... in fact it seems to me that I must use what's already been packaged, and I can't replace something very easily.
 
I was wondering first of all if it's possible, and secondly if somebody reading this list is able / wants to work on, what I'd consider the "ultimate gnu distro". Basically, an "essential" distro that I can build on-demand with the software that I want, chosen from a list. It could be something very basic, a list where I can choose which kernel I want, which init system, and basic tools. Once I have an "essential" distro build on demand (with only the basic tools), then I can install whatever application I want. But what I'd really like is a basic distro that I can build (choosing the basic component from a list).
 
Would this be possible? Is my email clear enough?
