My tiny addition I think points out the innovative facet of the project:

Having thousands of computer system security articles available to read on
the web, this book was conceived to fill the demand for a modern all in one
manual that, in contrast with the previous, will educate the reader on how to 
build a hardened system and not to harden an existing one or have others do 
it for him. Named after and based on Linux From Scratch, HLFS is a book.....

IMHO, many books have tried to cover all aspects of securing a system. This 
project however does not do simply that. It moreover teaches you how the real 
work of securing a system is done.
