If you get the itch, you can definitely get to a plasma/wayland desktop. This took me a course of about a week from some trial and error (one I was wanting a pure wayland build, but that is still impossible as parts of kf5 and plasma still require some xorglibs and xcb, even though I tried to hack it out of there).
