VMware emulates the 440BX/ PIIX4E chipset. Apologies in advance if this is posted in the wrong place. I will happily post to a different list if requested. Thanks. I built lfs using overlay filesystem and later in a systemd-nspawn container. Both work. Can you tell us more about both approaches? How do you use overlay to build LFS?
