older LFS partition boots, the new one does not - with same kernel

it gets stranger with every experiment I try.
I compiled the same kernel directly on the machine with the same .config=20
file, installed it on the working 12.0 partition, and it works fine, can=20
load USB and ethernet modules.

That kernel, installed on the fresh 12.4-dev partition, does - again -=20
not work. It shows the same exceptions when trying to load the kernel=20
modules. I guess I could include the drivers into the kernel instead of=20
loading them as modules, but I suspect there might be other problems=20
apart from not being able to load modules.

I still have no idea what's going on there. I'll replace the harddisk=20
next and see where that leads. I'm not sure if it helps. I compared the=20
files between 12.0 and 12.4-dev, and there were no read errors, and the=20
files were identical except one called "modules.weakdeps".

I realized my previous try to compare files binary would not have worked=20
- "cmp -s" is *always* silent, even with errors, and only gives an exit=20
code then. I used "cmp -s ... || echo "! ${f} not ok" this time ;-)
