This is not how it works=E2=80=A6 x32 is just another architecture to
support, like mipsel or amd64. Completely working on its own,
except it uses the amd64 Linux kernel just like many peoples=E2=80=99
i386 installations do.

No, gcc is compiled to default to a target; for x86 platform
that means i386 arch (i386-pc-linux-gnu) or amd64 arch
(x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) or x32 arch (x86_64-linux-gnux32).

No, the GNU triplet is different, and co=C3=AFnstallability
with other architectures is highly required.
