I don't have a FC4 box handy so I can't recreate this for myself.

what does 'dmesg' show?  Any kernel oops, or something like that?

... I know kudzu loads the modules then unloads them to perform hardware 
detection.  Did that succeed earlier?

Any hotplug processes running?  is wland loaded?
