I have now successfully compiled and installed.

First I upgraded to a 2.6.8 kernel, and then I had to alter one of the
lines in the header files (wlan_compat.h) from
#include linux/hardirq.h
to
#include asm/hardirq.h

I don't know if this *feature* needs to be advised to the source code
team?
