got pcmciautils working, but now linux-wlan is not, ifconfig does not show device

Ok, I got pcmciautils working, but now linux-wlan is not working. did the
device name change from wlan0 or something?

I had to use hotplug instead of udev, and I have this
/sys/bus/pcmcia/devices
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Sep 27 18:54 0.0 ->
../../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0a.0/0.0


so that is my card, so why, after starting wlan like before, does wlan0 not
show up under ifconfig -a? did i need to change wlan.conf as well after the
upgrade to pcmciautils?
