Hello.

My wireless USB network adapter (Dell TrueMobile 1180, 413c:8100) is a
802.11b compatible product. Currently in our office we use a wireless
gateway. The gateway can be configured with a web interface and it has
two modes: 802.11g mode and 802.11b mode. Currently it is on 802.11g mode.

I tried to follow this guide on wireless setup:

http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Prism2_USB_on_Gentoo

And end up cannot obtain IP address. I think it maybe because I use a
802.11b device trying to connect to 802.11g network. Does 802.11g
network allows 802.11b device to join? If I switch my gateway to 802.11b
mode, I am afraid I would have slowed everyone else down.

Here is how I tried to connect (I have configured wlan.conf and
wlancfg-HBF to use WEP/opensystem and 10-digit Hex key, the
authentication method and key are the same as everyone else in the office)

root@esmeralda:/etc/conf.d# wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
message=lnxreq_ifstate
  ifstate=enable
  resultcode=success
root@esmeralda:/etc/conf.d# wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=HBF authtype=opensystem
message=lnxreq_autojoin
  ssid='HBF'
  authtype=opensystem
  resultcode=success

P.S. If linux-wlan has a tool that I can use to scan available networks
to join, then I think I should be able to tell if it's not possible for
me to join 802.11g network by myself.
