What I would like to see is not only support for SH-type of shells (posix, bash,
ksh, ash, zsh), but also for C-Shells (csh, tcsh), maybe using the extension
*.csh. Since the lsbinstall command supports only *.sh by default, this could
then easily be added.
While I would say that "*.sh scripts shall use only POSIX sh commands", I think
"*.csh should use only C shell commands", i.e. the use of TCSH is not
explicitely forbidden, but only discouraged. (Well, using $?tcsh one can find
out which csh is present. Using /bin/ls -l /proc/$$/exe to find whether this is
a bash is probably not the best method ;)
(As a side note: SUSE does meanwhile support /etc/profile.d/*.{sh,bash,csh,tcsh}
[I'm actually unsure about ./*.bash].)
Reasoning for the *.csh support:
While CSH is not POSIX and not as widely used, many users use it. At our
department tcsh used to be the default for the users (no bash) which means that
there are users which request tcsh (at other places). We have currently 412 bash
and 503 tcsh users. Since csh and sh are widely incompatible and it should
possible to provide these options to both groups of users, I think it is
important to support *.csh as well.
