Sorry for the long delay in respond to this email. After looking at the 
way both the native groff and the one in appbat process the troff.1 file 
it looks like either a problem with the troff.1 man page or some other 
problem that is consistent with the native version. To avoid problem with 
the appbat testing I am going to modify the fvt instructions for groff to 
process the pic.1 man page instead. This will be okay since the appbat is 
not meant to be an exhaustive test of the app itself.
