LVM 1.1: Can't create PVs

1) pvcreate command fails telling me there is a partition table on the disk (hda) but the return code is still 0. Since the script thinks it succeeded, it continues to the vgcreate which then fails since there are no valid PVs specified. 2) I use "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=1k count=10" but still get the same error from pvcreate. fdisk -l says there is no partition map on hda.
