Anybody managed to get sftp working?

Has anyone out there have any experience with sftp? Because for the life 
of me I cannot use it for file transfer. Makes no difference what 
hardware I use, I always get the response: Received answer too long 
1181903136. Curiously, I am having the same problem even when using 
32bit boxes. I only bring this up as the new version of gftp - 2.0.18 - 
calls sftp instead of running ftp over ssh2 and addressing the 
sftp-server directly.

All suggestions, tips etc will be gratefully received - and answers may 
be long too!
