Time for bed. The repositories are the local DVD and both sections of the EasyURPMI list, about 8 sites I think. I am pretty sure there were no backports or testing repositories. Will check later. I am afraid I did not notice where the ruby and tk packages came from. This was the sequence: urpmi ruby-tk urpmi tkimg urpmi ruby-devel gem install rubygems-update rubygems_update urpmi numlock enable_X11_numlock urpmi gqview urpmi me-tv At some point I tried to install freeguide, maybe from a local RPM (can't remember just now). It seemed to install but failed to run. I must have also installed xmltv and the tv_grabbers package as well. Did not investigate further. The ruby based applications are all homegrown, one with a 25 year history, and do nothing to affect the system. Disk errors would spring to mind but I think can be ruled out given that this problem is not unique to my system. It seems unlikely that other users would have experienced exactly the same disk corruption if that were the cause. I was loath to invoke badblock checks during formatting because it takes a devil of a long time on a 52 Gb partition. Must go. Buona notte. Len
