One thing I forgot about the USB headset setup on Skype until after I 
hit send was about the mixer.

The headset I have has a click-able volume switch sort of on the right 
earcup for volume up and down. That actually works. But it defaults to 
whatever the main volume control is set to in the Pulse mixer. If you 
right click the mixer icon on the systray, you can select the USB volume 
for these controls. I never bothered once I found out how they worked 
and just let the mixer main set to the on board sound card. I just 
didn't use these enough on the headset to make changing worthwhile.

Also, once I had Skype selecting the USB headset, the playback volume 
was low, even though the Pulse mixer for the USB headset on Skype was 
maxed out. As I discovered, there are other mixer controls for the USB 
headset in the alsamixer. Running the alsamixer from the command line 
and selecting the USB headset sound card, then all controls, showed the 
sliders that I needed to increase. Once I did that, I had volume to 
burn. A quick alsactrl card(x) to have ALSA save it across reboots, 
insert your card number there, likely 1 if you have an on-board card 
already at 0. And I was set.
