Funkyness with X in 2010.2

I seem to recall a while ago, that I had this issue.  Unfortunately, I had
to reinstall 2010.2 and the nafarious "black screen of idiocy" has returned.

I recall there was an issue with sometihg shipped with 2010.2 that needed to
be updated.

Anyone recall what the heck that was?
