I have to disagree with you on this one.  I have often had 
XFdrake show me a good test screen but startx fail to bring up a 
gui desktop.  The problem has usually been left-over .*auth* 
files in the home directory.

It seems that XFdrake sets up things and tests what it has set 
up.  Then startx reads in the .*auth* stuff lying around and 
x-windws takes a walk through the woods.

Removing the old cruft is something I have found often to be 
essential.
