startx KDE4
startx GNOME

You can also put the choice of desktop in .desktop in your home 
directory and let the x-startup script /etc/X11/Xsession find 
that.  (Look below line 82 that reads,
# now, we see if xdm/gdm/kdm has asked for a specific environment
