Because there probably is not room for a 2nd drive, you are probably going 
to need a drive in a usb enclosure.  But that is what you have.  Do you 
have permissions to write to that volume when running as the normal user?

In which case I would use amanda, but then I'm partial to it, have been 
using it, essentially building the latest alpha versions as soon as they 
show so that I essentially play the part of the canary in the coal mine for 
amanda's development for about 12 years now.

Again, check the permissions.
