There are plenty of alternatives you could try instead. I've used Xfce since (I think) Mandrake 9.2 - it isn't an option offered at installation time, has to be downloaded afterwards, so I opt for Gnome at installation and use that until I've downloaded & installed all updates and all the packages needed for Xfce.
