It would be interesting to know what you mean by too heavy.  I have
used nothing but GNOME since Mandrake 7.2 and have hardly been aware
of any changes in the look and feel or whatever is going on under the
hood.  The version numbers show that it is evolving but I hardly
notice.  However, I never touch file managers or built in mail clients
or web browsers or cascading menu systems.  And you can still run most
of those great KDE applications like kIIIb and Amarok.  GNOME is bound
to support PIM and all those other applications which people seem to
find indispensible these days - you probably know more than me having
used it in the past.

In spite of Mandriva being KDE-centric you will find plenty of GNOMEs
to help you on this list, non-Luddites to boot.

By far the worst thing that has happened recently is the falling off
of support for Linux on advanced graphics hardware from the likes of
nVidia and ATI.  That makes setting up high resolution monitors a pain
and reduces graphics throughput enormously.  A good reason to stay
with 2008.1.
