Nope.  Black screen syndrome.  To get back to square one I had to urpme 
x11-video-driver-nvidia-current-180.51 then
urpmi nvidia.  Ran XFdrake just for laughs - it offered a low resolution 
in the test even though it had detected the 1920x1200 screen.  Overwrote 
the xorg.conf with one made earlier and back in business. 

Presumably the 190.32 driver would work with 2008.1 but I am not about 
to try it.
