You answred a question she did not ask.

Mary,

Have a partition of appropriate size available for the install.
Select custom install and put the entire Kubuntu install in that.

I do not know how Kubuntu handles multiple OS installed.  You
might need to use a Mandriva install disk, go to rescue mode,
and reinstall the boot loader to get everything arranged nicely,
so you will have your choice of which to boot at boot time.

But Kubuntu may take care of that too,  I think it would, but
have never tried Kubuntu so I cannot say.
