I think you can strike the 'esc' key to clear the splash screen -
however I found this to be a hit'n'miss affair :-)

I edited the boot parameters in lilo and removed the 'splash=silent"
parameter to get around the splash screen.

One workaround would be to start in failsafe mode and edit /etc/inittab
line which reads "id:5:initdefault:" and change the 5 to a 3. This will
allow you to get to a console screen from where you can sort out your
graphics problem(s).

You don't tell us what your video card is so it's bit difficult to
diagnose.
