disabling gnome screensaver

Trying to follow the directions in the xscreensaver man page however something isn't right. Below is what's to be entered on the cli, gconftool-2 --type boolean -s \ /apps/gnome_settings_daemon/screensaver/start_screensaver \ false however, when entering this I keep getting: Error: Parse error: Didn't understand ` false' (expected true or false) and I've tried everything I could think of.
