Open a konsole / xterminal
Type su, hit enter, type the root password.
type cd/usr/share/sane <enter>
type ls gt68xx <enter>
Is there a directory called gt68xx with something in it?
if not, type mkdir gt68xx <enter>
type cd gt68xx <enter>
type ls -l A1* <enter>
Does the file A1fw.usb show? Is it larger than 0 bytes? (just checking)
type cp /path/to/where/you/downloaded/A1fw.usb ./ <enter>
if the machine asks if it should overwrite A1fw.sub, type y <enter>
type ls -l A1* <enter>
Verify that the file has been copied
teyp exit <enter>
Give the scanner a try.

I really would not know. What happened since last time? Were there
upgrades? Was there a problem in other ways?
Hard to tell from here...
