Let's see if this helps (just stabbing at options at the moment, it is what I would do here): As root type: mkdir -p /usr/share/sane/gt68xx cd /usr/share/sane/gt68xx Then do the cp command: cp /path/to/where/you/downloaded/A1fw.usb ./ and see if things want to work then. Before actually starting xsane, you could also do this: open a new xterm, become root and cd to /var/log do "tail -f syslog" there and watch what happens there when you start xsane. Are there messages that report something w.r.t. xsane and a problem, if the fix above does not work? (You can stop the tail with ctrl-c after trying xsane.)
