Right... then here you do the mkdir gt68xx, cd gt68xx and copy the 
driver in place.
Very weird that the directory was removed...

If this does not get your scanner to work, I would suggest you remove 
the xsane package and reinstall it, so things are in order again. Maybe 
after that you need to put the driver in place once more, but you should 
have the commands for that now.
