Thanks for getting in touch Hugh.  I had forgotten all about my TV 
experiments but will summarize what comes to mind.

I gave up on MythTV - too much like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut 
and with one of those flashy modern interfaces which I find awkward and 
slow to use.  Totem was not very satisfactory and I seem to remember 
having trouble with kaffeine as well.  Me-TV does the job without fuss 
so I used that in the end.  However I had wanted to use the TV stick to 
watch or record on my desktop machine but found that it could not lock 
on to any signal around 50% or below.  That was using the same Freeview 
antenna and preamp aerial feed used by the digital TV.  There has never 
been a problem with the television receiver.  The bigger problem with 
the USB TV stick was that the whole PC would freeze up after a few 
minutes, 20 minutes, half an hour.  Dead mouse, dead keyboard.  My 
conclusion was that the USB system could not cope with the data rates.  
It might have been a contention problem or a failure in an interrupt 
handler - no way to diagnose it.  Reducing the number of USB connections 
did not help.  For the record, the lockups did not happen on my XPS710 
laptop, but that has fewer USB slots.
