Do you have gcc-c++-4.4.3-2mnb2 or the package suitable for your 
OS installed?  You will also need libraries and other development 
files.

Is /usr/bin/gcc-4.4.3 or a similar version in place? 
/usr/bin/gcc is simply a symlink that probably goes to something 
in /etc/alternatives that should call the program used.

You might try installing task-c++ and see what that pulls in.
