[root@ xxx]# rpm -q rpm-mandriva-setup
rpm-mandriva-setup-1.44-1mdv2008.0

Sorry for my mistake, that was indeed the relevant information. After an update
to   
rpm-mandriva-setup-1.45-1mdv2008.0.x86_64
rpm-mandriva-setup-build-1.45-1mdv2008.0.x86_64

I can install APE without trouble!
