The "Microsoft route" reffered to is that in the beginning of MS, they did everything they could to give information to the programmers and end users about their O/S. (A pre-Opensource way of doing business).  Unlike Apple, there was no red tape or hoops you had to jump through. And they became the dominate O/S for this reason. Now they are worse than Apple ever was.

We helped take Mandrake out of bankrupsy and back on it's feet. I'm not going to list everything that I personally have done, but now they have decided to abandon what worked to get them there.

Sounds like the MS route to me.
