All this talk about free firewall, so I just thought I'd chime in here. I finally convinced my company to purchase a full version of the MNF corporate firewall. I had the unfortunate timing of purchasing just before Mandrake was no more. My incident postings on the paid support site were ignored for days, and then given a canned responses that were of no use. I even tried the tech support telephone number. It was unanswered, and my telephone messages were not returned. The telephone number has subsequently been disconnected. I would think I would be due a free copy of the new firewall, but when I called ordering I got a sorry I can't do that. This has left a bad taste, and my company and I are done with M-whatever for now. I doubt I will be able to convince them to try again, and I don't blame them. Steve P.S. Vincent (on behalf of Mandriva), has every right to ask that discussions of another firewall be taken elsewhere. Lets just put that one to rest right now! I mean no offence here Vincent, but to us, Florin DOES = firewall god. Why? He was the only one from MANDRAKE (notice I said Mandrake not Mandriva) to consistently listen to us and help us out with our respective installs/problems. You will see that Florins posts feature heavily on this list! I don't want any discussion on this, I've said what I had to say - lets put this one to rest also! As the original instigator of this discussion, I am wishing I hadn't brought this up now. I do apologise for my obvious poor judgement on this matter. ---------- From: [email protected] on behalf of Vincent Danen Sent: Thu 4/08/2005 07:19 To: security-firewall-4qZELD6FgxheH41UXmfQsti2O/[email protected] Subject: Re: [Security Firewall] Florins Firewall On 3-Aug-05, at 11:30 AM, Carl A Jeptha wrote: > It appears that Mandriva, is trying to take back it's list, > products and all other things. Trying to take back? No. It just seems odd to me that everyone is discussing forking MNF on the MNF mailing list. As I said, I don't really care what you do... it's all open source, and you're freely available to do what you like with it. But I think it's rude to discuss that proposition on the list of the product you're planning to fork. The decision has been made, a consensus informally reached, and someone asked what the next step should be. I respectfully asked that the next step should be a separate mailing list to discuss what to do with it... nothing more. Look, this isn't a new scenario. I was dissatisfied with Corporate Server to do what I wanted, so over a year and a half ago I took the Mandrake 9.2 base and forked it to start a self-propelled project called Annvix. Out of respect for Mandriva, I do not discuss Annvix on any of the mailing lists, and I don't include more normal Annvix- ad signature on a Mandriva mailing list. This is not because I'm trying to hide what I'm doing, and Annvix is far less competition to a Mandriva project than "Florin's Firewall" would be. I do this out of respect for the fact that Annvix is *not* a Mandriva product or project, and it shouldn't be discussed on their lists. Anyone who wants to discuss Annvix is asked to either subscribe to the Annvix mailing lists or to email me directly. This isn't tyranny, this isn't about taking a list back, this isn't about taking a product back, this is all about one thing: respect. > Now I have not paid for a firewall yet, but was considering it, > (but I do own other versions) as I wanted support for my ISP > company and a couple of commercial sites that I supply support to. > But this is my last message as I will be unsubscribing tomorrow. Why? I don't understand what I said that made everyone so upset. You folks were discussing forking the product. Are you upset because I asked you to move it somewhere else? Would it have been better if I put on my moderator hat and said discussing the fork was off topic? Either way, *all* I did was ask you to talk about it elsewhere. I didn't ask you to stop, I didn't rant and scream, I didn't demand anything. I just asked you to, out of respect for the company you're planning to fork a product from, to discuss it somewhere else. There might be people here who actually want to discuss *MNF* and not "Florin's Firewall". Why are you so offended because I asked you to move the discussion? > This means that all samba servers and demo workstations will be > replaced, because you see, Vincent there is more to Mandriva than > it's firewall, but you have shown a direction that Mandrake > (Mandriva) is taking, which is the Microsoft route. I have owned a > copy of Mandrake since the last decade, but will now change direction. Huh? How do you figure we're taking a Microsoft route? I'm completely lost. Did we threaten to sue anyone? Are we telling you to stop? Are we asking you to pay a fee to fork it? Absolutely not! I asked for one simple thing and as a result some of you people have utterly lost all common sense! Comparing my asking you to move discussion to another list to Microsoft tactics? Excuse me? That's the most insane thing I think I've possibly ever heard! Don't you think you're over-reacting a little bit? And absolutely there is more to Mandriva than just the firewall, which is why I'm confused as to why everyone thinks we should be giving it away for free. We give the desktop version of Mandriva away for free. We make the CVS available for MNF... you'll notice it's not hidden, it's not locked away, it's not out of the public's hands. Which is another reason I'm insulted you compare us to Microsoft. But despite all of this, and all we do, it seems like it's not enough. You get upset because we don't give you the final product with a bowtie and silver plate? Come on... if you want the fancy wrapping, you need to pay for it. But there's nothing stopping you from getting your hands dirty and compiling a few things out of CVS is there? Absolutely not. > I have noticed that all this has happened since the company name > change. I hate to say it, and I don't mean to sound rude, but I think you're reading far too much into what's happening. Conspiracy theorist perhaps? > So to all the lurkers it was great while it lasted, > > You have a Good Day now, You too, Carl, but I must admit that I am completely and utterly confused by not only your attitude and threats, but by your entire rational. It absolutely does not make sense to me. -- "lynx -source http://linsec.ca/vdanen.asc | gpg --import" {FEE30AD4 : 7F6C A60C 06C2 4811 FA1C A2BC 2EBC 5E32 FEE3 0AD4}
