Eventually the uninstall exited:

removing kernel-2.6.11.12mdk-1-1mdk.i586
error: %preun(kernel-2.6.11.12mdk-1-1mdk) scriptlet failed, exit status 0

/boot has no kernel, initrd or vmlinuz for .12, and there is no stanza in
lilo.conf, yet rpm -qa|grep kernel says it is still there.

Is it still worth trying this? If so, I'll do it in the morning.
