I'm sorry but that's not a realistic view. In the old days before exploits 
became a big issue we used to compete to see who would have the longest 
running servers. 

With all the exploits today you'd be the fool for not keeping your system up 
to date. It's not longer practical to have months and years of uptime. 

True, many people, eh... most, never bother. But it's something that can and 
should get you into deep water if you are responsible for a network and you 
don't keep the applicable security updates up to date.

Besides under open source patches seldom break other things, unlike some O/S's 
we know who always break something else.
