I have just reinstalled the same configuration on a third machine 
(mandriva 2006, openldap-servers, openldap-customer, pam_ldap, 
nss_ldap), by not configuring only the file nsswitch.conf (by adding 
ldap only on passord, shadow, group), I start again and the problem 
appears also it is thus perfectly reproducible some is the PC too

When I boot in single user I have the same problem : very long to boot 
(stop on "mount sysfs in /sys"). After, I launch syslog, do getent 
passwd and then no messages in the files in /var/log

I don't think to have any name resolution problems.
