Thank you Stanislav for your advice.

CentOS 7 (updated to current status i.e. release 7.2.1511) already 
includes syslinux v4.05.

I have also tried to check initrd to make sure everything looks fine and 
I didn't notice anything abnormal. I restored to a VM with identical 
specifications (to the original), so it should work out of the box, as 
it had numerous times in the past.

I hope someone will be able to trace the source of the problem.
