Quick and partial answer (to your question in the first item) : if 
ntfsprogs is what we used to find in previous Debian/Ubuntu distros, it 
looks like in v16.04.1 it is called :

ntfs-3g - read/write NTFS driver for FUSE

I will complete the installation according to your suggestion and run a 
full test later
