You can use star instead of afio. Use option -R on the CLI for that.
Plese forward the logs if you find issues.

As you can read on the ML, some people use (for a good or bad reason) an old version of their LInux distribution so I don't want to prevent them to use MondoRescue if possible.

Not really. MondoRescue works on a live system to backup, not targetting another system that would need to be mounted, thu creating a difference betzeen the host and the mounted one. The SW is too dpendent of that fact to be easily changed for this to work as of now.
