Try running a full night full memory test suite memtest86 I believe  
it's called. Userland application shouldn't be able to crash the kernel.

You can't really go over this with a single compressed file. See for  
example wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ 
ISO_9660#The_2_GB_file_size_limit

What you could do is modify morphix base to overlay two 2Gb  
filesystems. I'm not sure what tax would this have on memory. Your  
other option would be to put the big media files on the CD itself and  
somehow link to them from your system.
