Seems strange to me as well.  Anyway, here's what I did:
At LILO - linux init 1
at init 1 - enter for maintenance
su root
passwd (gave myself a new password)
at GDM allowed myself to login as root
added regular user (too lazy to do it in console mode :)
Taa daa!!!

Thanks a mil!  I now have a Debian GNU/Linux system up and running!  I'm 
sure I'll have other questions, but for now, I'm lovin' it.
