Laptop install

I have installed Morphix KDE 0.4-1 on the H/D of an old laptop (Hitachi
Visionbook plus with 80 MB Ram and 133 MHZ intel chip.) I would very much
like to get the X server working but all my attempts to tweak the XF86config
file are not successful and after entering  "startx"  I get a message:
    XIO.  Fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on xserver "0.0"
after 0 requests (O known processed) with 0 events remaining.

The laptop manual describes the display as follows: 12.1" High addressing
STN; maximum colors 256; 800X600 pixels

Anyone with any suggestions as to how I can get the XF86 server display
working or is it impossible with this particular video display?
