ebtables on RHEL 3.0

Can someone tell me if ebtables filter works on Red
Hat Enterprise Linux ES 3.0 / update5 (kernel:
2.4.21-27) ?
After installation and following all config steps:
patching the kernel (patch 2.4.21) / menuconfig...etc
I receive the following error:

# ebtables -L
modprobe: Can't locate module ebtables
The kernel doesn't support the ebtables 'filter'
table.

If it's not working with this kernel, do you know
other method to change the source mac addr of all
outgoing packages?
