My original post was done during troubleshooting of a broken Transparent 
Bridge that used ebtables and iptables to feed the Squid on a system 
upgraded from FC3 to FC4. After posting, I of course discovered that 
ebtables was still working wonderfully, and that the fault lay in a kernel 
bug that killed some connection tracking in FC4. The Fedora kernel folks 
fixed the problem very quickly, and kernel-2.6.12-1.1398_FC4 put everything 
right again.

I'll probably stay with gcc4, but have gained greater respect for the people 
who must maintain the base of all the repositories, and personal projects, 
that make open source so much fun..
