Please do ask the obvious. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the 
imagination -- the obvious needs to be asked!

I'm not sure what you mean by "bring up vlan3 unnumbered" -- but I used the 
following commands:
vconfig add br0 3 (or eth0, or whatever interface.)
ifconfig vlan3 0
which does bring vlan3 up but does not assign an IP to it.
(I did try vlan3 in a down state to br0. It gave no errors but did not pass 
traffic. In order for vlan3 to work, it _must_ be enabled with ifconfig 
vlan3 0 or some such.)
