This is limited by the virtual memory space. I've spawned 27K threads with 'test_str02 -l' on my Linux box with 1G memory and 128M swap. The tunables to lower the thread stack size can extend this, default is 64K; if you can safely lower it for your threads it gives more space, I've used 16K before for a high thread count process that needed more threads. Use the 'export DEFAULTTHREADSTACKSIZE=16' for 16K default thread stacks, or use the pthread_attr_stacksize() attribute for the threads.
