Thanks for your reply.
The output in opcontrol.log looks like this:
     ...
     + test yes = yes -a -f /dev/oprofile/backtrace_depth
     + set_param backtrace_depth 0 
     + test yes = yes
     + echo 0
     sh: write error: Invalid argument

I put the binaries in the /root/ directory of the MIPS target board.  It's a bit space-constricted, so I couldn't put all the binaries on there.  Currently, my directory looks like this:

# pwd
/root
# ls
mips                 opcontrol.log        opreport
op-check-perfevents  ophelp               oprofiled
opcontrol            opjitconv

The 'mips' directory contains one folder, '74K', which I copied from my $PREFIX/share/oprofile/mips directory after it had finished compiling.
