Oh... it is more complicated than that.  There is a register setting
for 8/16 bit mode, now that I think about it.

Change:

    ei_status.word16 = 1;

to:

    ei_status.word16 = 0;

You'll also need to remove the odd-byte handling and fix "count" to be
in bytes rather than words, around the insw/outsw code.
